Washington DC

Welcome to my online travel scrapbook! This was the trip that almost wasn't, even after it started. But we managed to pull it off! DC wasn't our intended destination. We had a week long trip to Edinburgh, Scotland planned. It was going to be fabulous. It started in London, catching sights we missed seeing on our last trip there, and then continued on the Caledonian Sleeper train to Edinburgh where we had tickets to the Military Tattoo and a day trip to a nearby highland games and other fun things. But at about 2 weeks until our trip, we learned that a rail strike in the UK was going to severely sabotage our means of transportation, including the sleeper train, and we were hesitant to rent a car in a place where folks drive on the wrong side of the road. So, we cancelled our mostly refundable tickets and planned to try again another year.  Meanwhile, my mom had gotten covid about 3 weeks before the trip. She sailed through covid, and so when Scotland fell through, I started plan...

Unicoi State Park near Helen, GA

Welcome to our online travel scrapbook! The last time I visited Unicoi State Park, I was about 10 years old. I went with my parents and we stayed in a barrel cabin. I thought it was great fun to climb up to my own sleeping loft in the cabin. This time, I visited with my husband in a travel trailer and found it great fun to imagine how run down those cabins must be by nearly 50 years later. I've been back to Helen many times since then, and for a while it was an annual New Year's destination with cousins to stay in their cabin. But, this was my first time back at Unicoi since I was a child. We enjoyed our time. although we didn't participate much in the offerings inside the park other than the campground. There wasn't anything particularly special about the campground other than a nice lake to walk around. We could have done the archery range - maybe next time.  Back in the 1970s, Helen, GA was really fun. Maybe it was because I was a child and all of the Swiss-Alps-them...

Vacationing In The Time of Coronavirus: St. Simons Island

Welcome to our online travel scrapbook! It's been 2 years without any significant travel for the Lowes. This wasn't what we had planned, but Covid made our travel plans for us. My daughter and I had intended to take a trip to NYC in April of 2020 during spring break. And then Broadway shut down and ended our NYC travel plans. We were still hopeful for a family trip in the summer. Maybe a trip out west. San Antonio. Yellowstone. Grand Canyon. Thinking was as far as we got before everything shut down. So, no big trip for the Lowe family. It's now 2022, and our daughter is a college student. We've all 3 managed to avoid covid, thankfully, and St. Simons Island, GA is where we've done most of our vacationing. I used to live here, and still come back regularly to stay in my former condo now owned by my parents, so I know the island well. St. Simons is a unique place, a beautiful barrier island on the coast of Georgia with Spanish moss waving from ancient maritime oak tr...
